A connection between the restoration of Israel and of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is this, I think: God said that He would provoke Israel to jealousy (and also to anger) through those who speak with another tongue/language. It’s true that this probably refers primarily to non-Hebrew language believers, like heard at that first Pentecost/Shavuot, and among the vast majority of Christians. On the other hand, tongues, as a gift of the Holy Spirit (which gift I do not have, by the way) are also a sign to unbelievers, which it certainly was at that first occasion; and also, it could possibly be said, when Cornelius and his household spoke with other tongues, it convinced ‘unbelieving’ Peter that God was also saving Gentiles just like He was the Jewish people.
The beginning of the major return of the Jewish people back to this land began around 1880, picking up some momentum following the First Zionist Congress in 1897. It was just around this period that the Pentecostal revival took place, with its emphasis on speaking in tongues. For centuries, there was no Israel in Israel; neither was there much talk about the gift of tongues. Both are under attack, because both are from God; both have their internal contradictions, which give a bad report abroad; God is moving on . . . towards completing what He began.
The destiny of Israel and of the Church are intertwined through he same God and Lord and Holy Spirit! Let those who have ears to hear, hear what the Spirit is saying to the Body of Messiah/Christ.
