BIBLICAL HEALING

Mk 6:5-6   Now [Jesus] could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.  And He marveled because of their unbelief.

I confess to lacking full faith for healing, while at the same time acknowledging that God does heal, our Father wants to heal, and the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is glorified when people are healed in His name (Ex 15:26); and those who are healed are especially blessed when they thank the Lord for what He did for them in His grace and mercy and power (Lk 17:15-19)

We ourselves here in this congregation have seen the Spirit of God heal in answer to prayer, and we have also seen cases where sicknesses and wounds did not go away.  We have fasted and prayed for persons, and, despite mixed results, we do it unto God and praise His holy name.

Throughout the Bible we are encouraged to approach God our Father for healing and health (Rom 8:32; Mt 7:7,11; Mk 11:24; Jn 16:24).  It is clear that believers do get sick, which is a consequence of still being in this body in this world where sin is.  But it is also clear that we are to make choices that promote healthy bodies and souls, and to also seek to be made well when we are sick in body, soul, or spirit.  Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are to glorify God firstly by changing into the likeness of His Son, and also by caring for our bodies insofar as it is possible.

God has not changed, and Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  God is good and generous towards mankind, and especially towards those who believe in the name of Jesus.  There are those within the Body of Christ who teach that healing is one of those gifts which stopped a long time ago, but the Lord and the Apostles do not teach that.  There are many testimonies around the world from those who have been healed in the name of Jesus.  The fact that not all are healed does not nullify the Word of God any more than the fact of Israel being still a very sinful nation does not nullify the promises of God to Jacob and his descendants.

We want to look more closely at this subject, and we want to build faith, hope, and love in our lives to demonstrate that we are disciples of Jesus and that we are willing to obey Him in all things.  He is our life!  Sometimes God gives conditions we have to meet; other times He acts out of His sovereign goodness and grace even when we have not met those conditions.  Yet He still expects faith and obedience to Him and His Word.  There are times when God will do a miracle and heals someone instantly; at other times there is a process of progressive healing – a therapy; of ‘getting well’.

Ja 5:14-16   Is anyone among you sick?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer of faith will save [heal] the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.  And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
